My Father Cigars has begun shipping the Don Pepin Garcia E.R.H. to its retailers. This cigar had a soft launch late last year for Tobacconist Association of America (TAA) retailers.
E.R.H stands for El Rey de Los Habanos, named after the factory in Little Havana, Miami, where Don Pepin Garcia started out. The El Rey de Los Habanos line was released in Miami in 2005 and discontinued around 2011. In 2014, a new version was introduced as an exclusive cigar for The Pipe and Pint in Greensboro, North Carolina.
What was El Rey de Los Habanos has been rebranded as E.R.H. It is also now branded with the Don Pepin Garcia logo but keeps the line’s red band color. This is similar to what was done with Vegas Cubanas when it was rebranded.
Produced in Nicaragua, the Don Pepin Garcia E.R.H. now includes a Sumatra Rosado wrapper over Nicaraguan tobaccos from Condega, EstelĂ, and Jalapa. It is available in three sizes, each presented in ten-count boxes: Robusto (5 X 54), Toro (6 X 52), and Toro Gordo (6 X 60). Pricing ranges between $9.95 and $11.95.
The cigar is decked out in red bands and a red cloth band at the foot. It has an average feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were lemon drop, brown sugar, a little earthiness, and leathery black coffee. There was black pepper rated at 7 1/2. Pretty good start.
At the first third (20 minutes) the ash was still intact but a little angled. The sweet notes have decreased. The leathery black coffee has increased. The cigar is medium bodied but I expect it to move up. The finish is a hint of lemon with some earthiness and very good lingering black pepper. The sweet notes are hanging on enough to rate the first third 93.
As I moved through the second third (49 minutes) the leathery black coffee continues to creep up. The sweet notes are the same and are coming through but the leathery black coffee keeps slowly rising and taking their effects away. The cigar is medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. I rated the second third 92.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 15 minutes. The leathery black coffee held ground and did not rise in the final third. The only thing that changed was the strength, which went to full bodied. I held the score of 92. This cigar was a slight miss but it's not bad. I wanted it to be very good but it's ok. Well worth trying if you're a DPG fan, and I'm one of those. I wish it was a tad better.
