Protocol Cigars debuted the new vitola, corona gorda, at the 2019 IPCPR.
The size measures 5 5/8 x 46 and is offered in 10-count boxes priced at $99.40, or $9.94 per cigar. The company has also produced the line in three other sizes, Toro (6 x 52), Robusto (5 x 52) and Lancero (7 1/2 x 38).
The Themis line uses an Ecaudorian Connecticut wrapper over a Nicaraguan-grown binder and filler. It is produced at La Zona Cigar Factory in EstelĂ, Nicaragua and debuted in 2017.
The cigar is a light shade of brown and well made. It has an average feel in the hand for a corona gorda.
The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were a tangy tangerine/orange citrus, a lot of cream notes, nice amount of cinnamon, some brown sugar, and a light black coffee base. There was a nice amount of black pepper rated at 7 1/2.
At the first third the flavor notes are just like I described. The cream is very nice in this cigar. The citrus is quite tangy and now there is a lot of brown sugar and quite a bit of cinnamon. The black pepper is very dense in this cigar. It's at least a 7 1/2 and could be up to an 8. The finish is nutmeg, cream, and a touch of citrus. There is nice lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. For the first third I rated the cigar at 93.
At the second third I noticed nutmeg on the front end. Before it was too subtle to notice expect on the finish. The front end nutmeg mixes very well with the cream notes. I still had the nice tangerine citrus and the pepper remains excellent. It's definitely up to an 8. There is plenty of brown sugar and cinnamon, too. The finish is citrus, nutmeg, cream, and a lot of lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium to full bodied. For the second third I raised the score to 94.
I estimate the cigar lasted about 1 hour. Since the video was shot on my LG G6 phone I did not have the timer running but typically a corona gorda of this length yields about an hour burn time. In the final third the cigar reverted back to the way it was in the first third, which was pretty good. The flavors were not quite as intense as they were in the second third. I lowered the final third score back to 93. This is a tasty Connecticut cigar with some power.
