La Libertad Robusto by Villiger Cigars (5 x 52)

Video review HERE.

Villiger Cigars announces that the highly rated Villiger La Libertad will display an elegantly designed new cigar band, that prominently features the Villiger handmade premium cigar logo. The Villiger La Libertad originally featured a band with only the name “La Libertad” displayed.

Villiger North America President Rene CastaƱeda said: “The Villiger La Libertad is a cigar that is personal favorite and we are happy that this high rated brand will now be properly represented as a Villiger brand.”

La Libertad is Spanish for "freedom".

The Villiger La Libertad is produced at the ABAM factory in the Dominican Republic and blended by Jose MartiƔs Maragoto. The blend features a Brazilian wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and a combination of Nicaraguan and Dominican fillers. The cigars are available in four sizes:

Massive (6 x 60)

Each is presented in 20-count boxes.

The cigar is quite dense feeling and has a nice feel in the hand for a robusto.

The test draw after cutting the cap was good. The initial flavors at light up were a tangy cedar, lots of brown sugar and cinnamon, non-intrusive nutmeg, and a nice black coffee base. There was nice black pepper rated at 7 1/2. The cigar is basic in flavors but quite high is sweetness. The tangy cedar has some citrus aspects. A very nice, sweet start.

At the first third (29 minutes) the cigar is going along primarily like I initially described. Everything is a little more settled now. Initially the tangy cedar, brown sugar, and cinnamon were quite elevated and in your face, which is ok with me, but now they are somewhat settled to a more normal amount. The cedar is not quite as tangy but still very sweet. There are now some caramel notes which seem to have taken the place of some of the tangy notes. The nutmeg is creamy and has some bread-like flavors. The black coffee base is subtle but it's there. The finish is cedar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg which combine to make a paste of flavors. There was nice lingering black pepper also. The cigar is medium plus in strength and seems to be moving up. The cigar is quite enjoyable at this point. I rated the first third at 93.

Moving through the second third (55 minutes) there was an increase in the caramel and cinnamon notes. They combine to make a very sweet, high pitched flavor. You still have a somewhat tangy cedar and plenty of brown sugar to go with them. The nutmeg and black coffee seem to have dipped a bit. The cigar is a high grade medium to full bodied. The finish is unchanged. The cigar has not changed in the score. I held the score of 93 for the second third.

The cigar lasted 1 hour 16 minutes. There were subtle changes in the final third. The black coffee rose a little but it didn't take away much sweetness but it changed the overall scope of the cigar. The primary flavors are still intact. There is quite a bit of cinnamon and sweetness in this cigar. It reached full bodied in strength. The finish is unchanged The overall appeal of the cigar dropped just a tad so I lowered the final third score to 92. Still, a very good cigar that is value priced. You can purchase any of the La Libertad's sizes HERE.

Overall Score: 92.67
