AJ Fernandez Cigar Company has released its fifth blend under its New World line, the New World Dorado.
Dorado means “gold” and it is the name of one of AJ Fernandez’s farms in EstelĂ, Nicaragua. Fernandez gave the farm the name because he noticed a golden tint to the soil.
The cigar itself is produced at AJ Fernandez’s San Lotano factory. The cigar is a Nicaraguan puro and has mostly tobaccos from the Dorado farm. The wrapper, binder, and some of the fillers all come from the Dorado farm. The cigars will come in four box-pressed sizes: Robusto, Toro, Gordita, and Figurado – each presented in ten-count boxes.
The cigar is well made and box pressed. It has a nice feel in the hand.
The test draw after cutting the cap was very good. The initial flavors at light up were citrus, citrus peel, light cedar, brown sugar, nutmeg, and leather. There was black pepper rated at 7 to 7 1/2. Nice sweetness with some leather.
At the first third (26 minutes) there was a little citrus, a little cedar, brown sugar, light toffee, earthiness, and leather. The finish is toffee, earthiness, and leather with good lingering black pepper. The cigar has a cookie-like flavor. The notes are good but nothing is popping out. I rated the first third 93.
As I moved through the second third (49 minutes) I had toffee for sweet notes but the citrus and cedar are no longer there. There is a lot of earthiness and some leather. The finish is toffee with light leather and good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. The cigar lost a lot. I rated the second third 90.
The cigar lasted 1 hour 12 minutes. In the final third I had light toffee, quite a bit of earthiness, and light leather. The finish is light toffee and very light leather with very good lingering black pepper. The cigar is medium bodied. The cigar lost me. I expected much more. I rated the final third 88.
